It’s actually a bit pointless trying to convince an Apple fan to look at the Android tablet. However, there are rational consumers who are willing to look beyond the iPad. For these objective buyers, here are a few reasons why the Android tablet is actually a better choice than an Apple device.
First thing to know is that those who buy an iPad get everything – hardware and the OS – from Apple. This doesn’t leave much room for choice in terms of cost, size, features, service and support, etc. The fact that Apple is notorious for wanting to retain control and rights over all aspects of the device and its use simply means that consumers have even less say in the matter.
So in terms of size, the only choice Apple users have is the 9.56 inch iPad. Other manufacturers offer a range of sizes from 5 inches to over 10 inches. Some of these manufacturers have been offering front and back cameras for a long while now, and Apple has only recently responded with the same feature in the new iPad 2.
Open Source: Apple’s iOS is not open source and developers have to work with whatever changes Apple decides to incorporate. The Android OS, on the other hand, is an open source project based on Linux. There’s an army of developers working hard to add features and make it better, on top of the fact that any manufacturer can choose to use it which reduces the net cost for consumers.
Processing Power: This is yet another aspect where the iPad lags because of Apple’s need to maintain control. The processor is not powerful enough to handle any real multi-tasking or advanced computing needs. Putting a powerful processor would need changes like a battery able to withstand the drain.
Apple obviously doesn’t want to change what’s working so well, so they haven’t made these changes. But other manufacturers have made these changes. Their tablets currently have powerful processors far superior to the one in the iPad. It is starting to make a difference because the iPad is unable to handle applications which need a powerful processor.
Replacements: It’s virtually impossible to provide service and support for a single mold device like the iPad, which has no screws. Apple has to replace the entire device if a customer’s battery dies out. Android-based tablets don’t have this problem, and their manufacturers can easily provide service agencies with individual parts that can be replaced cheaply.
iTunes: iPad users are forced to sync with iTunes for transferring downloads purchased from another device to the iPad. The Android marketplace has no such tangled procedure required. Users can buy apps on any device and send it straight to the tablets without any syncing required.
The sum of it is that consumers need to think about the choices. The iPad offers a cool and hip device with no freedom or options except what Apple allows. The Android tablet is likely to be closer to what the consumer really wants, since there is so much choice from many different manufacturers.
