Many young people have the foresight to design and produce an item that is better than all of its predecessors. Jerome Mankowitz was one such man. Beginning in his youth he had a fascination with many things and set about to make them better. College years found him enthralled with the organ. It was an instrument he would become to love. Not only would he replicate it but he would manufacture a far greater instrument and begin his own company known as Allen Organs.
When the family moved to Pennsylvania, Mr. Mankowitz began in earnest his endeavor to make this kind of instrument. His initial efforts were began in the family basement and then to an unused area in his father’s mill. It was there he met another gentleman by the name of Norman Koons. Mr. Koons had the mechanical abilities Mankowitz needed. After months of effort the first musical device of its kind was sold and it was decided that a company would be formed and named Allen Organs after the city of Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The war and postwar years proved to be a difficult time for the fledgling company. Just as more and more of the organs were beginning to sell, workers had to be let go due to the dire economy. Despite all obstacles the Allen Company never lost sight of its pledge to manufacture the best organ that man had ever known.
What had begun as a small determined group, grew into a formidable company, with its greatest growth being seen in the 1960′s. One man with one idea had produced a company that manufactured an instrument that is yet to be outdone. Building organs to suit every possible arena from the smallest space to the largest space, is now being done.
The first organ ever sold was used for an unprecedented seventeen years and only then was its use discontinued because the buyer now had need for a larger organ. Since that time, many different models are now available. The Chapel model is ideal for small areas. The Protege that is known for its affordability, still gives quality sound. Over the years, as customers made suggestions, the flexible Heritage was born. Staying with the latest in technological demands, the acoustic Quantum digital organ was developed.
There is yet to be a musical device that can overshadow those made by Allen Organs. Although the company is now run by the founder’s son, it has left nothing of its original intent behind. Its major accomplishment has been to make an instrument that will provide years of enduring quality in workmanship and sound.
