Developing a relaxed diaphragm or what we call it here, a “released” diaphragm, would make all the difference to a centered, effortless singing performance that will certainly wow anyone who hears it. Even those new singers blessed with evident huge lung capacity along with a naturally relaxed diaphragm, freeze up in the last moment even though they prepared ahead of time. I recently held a workshop in my local neighborhood, when a very lovely lady from the group, after being shown the best way to release her diaphragm, announced “Oh, that feels so great!” She went on further to mention, “I maneuver around all day long feeling tensed up and never having the ability to let go of all that pressure, until now!” Moments like these are which remind me how very important correct breathing and the diaphragm really is for a singer and how working on it can change not only your voice but also the quality of your life.
