A V shape can be rounded or soft or it can be more pointed or hard and is preferred by individuals who like to hang their thumb over the fingerboard. Many re-issue instruments are equipped with this style. It is considered to be old school. These re-issues are noted by eras, like the fifties V, or a seventies C. When these re-issues are made they are manufactured to the specific era.
The headstock is a piece of wood that sits on the neck top where the tuning pegs are attached. Between these two pieces is placed a small slice of plastic or bone. This item is called a nut. The nut functions to raise the strings up off on the fret board. An alphabet letter designates the width of nut and the neck. D is the largest size and measures one and seven eights inches. C is one and three quarter, B is one and five eights, and A measures one and a half inches. These different widths ensure that there are guitars for all sizes of people.
